Hanish joins University of Maryland Medical Center, medical school

Dr. Steven Hanish

Dr. Steven Hanish has been named an associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Hanish specializes in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, as well as kidney and pancreas transplantation. He has expertise in the surgical management of both primary and metastatic disease to the liver and has a special interest in cholangiocarcinoma. He also has received subspecialty training in laparoscopic liver resection.

His research interest focuses on outcomes of liver transplant recipients and those patients with primary hepatic malignancies and the use of MRI in the diagnosis of liver tumors, both benign and malignant. Moreover, he has been active on both the national and local levels in increasing organ donation and process optimization to improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Hanish received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center. He also completed a multi-visceral abdominal transplant fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. In 2009, he was recruited to Emory University Hospital where he served as both a liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon and director of the multidisciplinary liver tumor board.
